Birthing Centre

Welcome to the Birthing Centre of the West Island Health and Social Services Centre (HSSC).

Since 1994, midwives from the Birthing Centre have helped deliver more than 3,500 babies.

Located on the third floor of the CLSC du Lac Saint-Louis, the Birthing Centre offers four cheerful rooms, a kitchen, a living room… just like home!

It’s the perfect place to give birth naturally by taking back the power of maternity.

The Birthing Centre promotes the autonomy of women and their families in a relationship built on mutual trust.

Services offered

  • prenatal group meetings
  • complete monitoring from your midwife, as of the start of the pregnancy up to six weeks after delivery (postnatal period)
  • complementary exams
  • childbirth in one of three locations: at home, at the Birthing Centre or in the hospital
  • water birth also available.

All services are paid by the Régie de l’assurance maladie du Québec (RAMQ).

Midwifery

Midwives are members of the Ordre des sages-femmes du Québec, the provincial association of midwives. They are health professionals who consider pregnancy, childbirth and the postnatal period as healthy and normal events.

The continuous and complete monitoring they offer mothers takes into account the physical, psychological and social significance of bringing a child into the world.

To become a midwife in Quebec, a four-year midwifery university program (offered since 1999) is required.

Midwives work in cooperation with medical teams for consultations as needed during the pregnancy, childbirth and the postnatal period.

Their ongoing training with obstetrical teams enables them to keep their skills up to date.

Midwives work with partners in the field and refer patients to community resources.
