Sandra Mooney Day, nurse at the Travellers' Health Clinic

Question: Do I need a vaccine if I’m going to a seaside resort in Cuba or the Dominican Republic?

Answer: Yes, we recommend that you at least get vaccinated against hepatitis A. We will make sure that your basic immunization (e.g., tetanus, measles) is up to date.

Q: Do I need medication against malaria (paludism) to visit Punta Cana, Bavaro and Baya Hibe in the Dominican Republic?

A: Yes, cases of malaria are reported each year so it’s best to use caution by taking medication.

Q: I’m leaving for Hajj/Umra in Saudi Arabia and I need the ACYW-135 vaccine. Do you offer it?

A: Yes, we offer the Menactra vaccine, which is mandatory to enter this country.

Q: Do I need any special information if I’m visiting a high-altitude area?

A: Yes, we recommend a consultation with one of our experts. The quantity of oxygen decreases as the altitude increases, which can lead to serious problems.

Q: Do I need the yellow fever vaccine if I’m going to Africa?

A: As yellow fever is spreading in several African countries, some countries require an International Certificate of Vaccination to enter.

Q: How many weeks before my departure should I come in for a consultation?

A: Ideally, you should come see us 4 to 6 weeks before your departure. If you are short on time, a consultation will still be beneficial.

Q: Is vaccination free of charge?

A: No, you will be billed for consultation and vaccination fees, since the services offered by the Travellers’ Health Clinic are not covered by the public insurance plan (RAMQ). Certain fees, however, could be reimbursed by your private insurance plan.
